Exploring Environmental Sounds With Seamus

Date: Sunday 29th January 2012
Time: 11am for 1 hour
Location: House Gallery
Places Available: CLOSED

Details:
This workshop focuses on the sounds that we hear everyday but rarely take the time to listen to and appreciate.  To begin with participants will be given a brief overview of some of the main properties we associate with sound and how people have used found sounds for musical purposes over the last 100 years.  Participants will be introduced to basic audio editing techniques using free software (audacity) and look at various approaches to capturing and transforming sounds.

Each participant should contribute one sound recording, no less than 30 seconds and no more than one minute in length.  After a brief introduction outlined above, participants will split into groups where they will investigate and assemble their sounds into a composition/audio journey.
All participants will have the choice to have their work exhibited in The Road Less Travelled and be able to take their work home with them.

Choosing a sound:
In keeping with the theme of this exhibition, each participant is asked to record and provide a sound that reminds them of a journey specific to their own experiences.  If we consider how many sounds we hear every day this in itself provides each participant with an almost limitless selection to choose from.  Ideally, each sound should be emailed to the following address once you sign up for the workshop: participart@gmail.com with the subject line Exploring Environmental Sounds Workshop. This should be in mp3 format.

Enrolment:
Please fill in the form below clearly stating the following:
  • Name
  • Age (if under 16)
  • Number of Participants

Please note that anybody under the age of 16 should be accompanied by an adult.

Electra's Statement:

I have found that photographs are emotionally charged, and we can never view our personal photos dispassionately.  In fact, these small pieces of paper are empowered far beyond their apparent value; their significance resonates to and from people, over the past and into the future, enabling journeys in memory and imagination.  Emotions connected to the subject matter can become transferred to the photographic representation of that subject as a type of stand-in for the real person, place, or thing.

Workshop Details:
In this workshop the theme of journeys will be explored through drawing using a photograph as a starting point that represents a real or symbolic journey to the participant.
You will draw from your chosen image using soft pastel on blackboard.
All participants will have the choice to have their work exhibited in The Road Less Travelled and be able to take their work home with them.

Choosing a photograph:
Each participant is asked to bring with them a family photograph or found family photograph that could represent a journey.

Enrolment:
Please fill in the form below clearly stating the following:
  • Name
  • Age (if under 16)
  • Number of Participants

Please note that anybody under the age of 16 should be accompanied by an adult.
